Yoga has been part of my life for the past 16 years. However I must admit that the true meaning of it just came to me about 7 to 8 years ago. I practiced assiduously during the first years without breathing consciously and also without hurting myself which is a miracle!! I was going to the “factory” doing my physical work and that was it!!
And then I started to focus on the breath and the yoga philosophy themes on which some classes were based. Gradually my practice took a whole different dimension and I also realized that the learnings from the classes could be transposed into daily life: patience, getting out of my comfort zone, accepting what is today, strengthening myself to better face life's events, be more (much more!!) relaxed... I became more and more curious about how yoga could be integrated in everyday situations.
Eventually, grateful towards the teachers who allowed me to integrate yoga into my life, I decided to do a Yoga Teacher Training in order to be able to transmit this learning. I did a 200 hours Yoga Teacher Training at Yoga Roof - Lugano/Switzerland and a 500 hours at Yoga Skyros-Athens/Greece. I am a registered member of the Yoga Alliance.
A "aha" moment in yoga teaching: when a few of my summer students decided not to go to a night club the night before in order to be fresh and sound for the 10 am class the next morning!!
I wish to give my students the right idea about yoga science. It is not a religion. Yoga philosophy is based on the study of different ancient writings, that are amazingly relevant to the world we live in today. In simple words, this science aims at bettering oneself physically, mentally and spiritually, without having to embrace a specific religion. In the whole process of Yoga, the physical part, what is called Hatha Yoga, is only one step towards the mental and spiritual improvement.
Therapeutic Yoga
Therapeutic Yoga is the use of yoga asanas (postures), breathing and meditation technics by people who have health challenges, under the supervision of a yoga therapist. These challenges may be physical or psychological (depression, anxiety, addiction...).
You can contact a yoga therapist without going through a medical doctor. In other situations your medical doctor, psychotherapist or any other therapist will refer you to a yoga therapist. After a thorough first conversation (in all confidentiality) where the patient explains what the issue is, and what he is expecting from the yoga therapy sessions, the yoga therapist will choose specific asanas(postures), breathing and meditation techniques to improve the patient's condition.
What therapeutic yoga can help you with:
Psychological issues: stress, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, depression, sleep disorders and addictions, support during cancer...
Physiological issues: chronic back pain and other chronic pains, fibromyalgia, arthritis, reeducation post operations and sprains, digestive troubles...
Yoga therapy is definitely entering and complementing the medical field, bringing a more holistic approach to treatments. The premise is that humans have a great inner potential to improve a psychological or physical issue should they be given the opportunity and knowledge to do so.
Coaching
Coaching is a powerful technique that allows a person (the client) to be supported by a coach. It is applied in many areas of life when there is a new project, a big change, uncertainty, lack of confidence, need for support and listening, for creating structure. The coach's main role is to listen. The client must feel heard and able to express themselves in a safe, non-judgmental space and in absolute confidentiality. As the client expresses himself the coach will ask related questions in order to support the client in exploring further and creating/finding solutions. One important aspect of coaching is that it holds the client accountable for achieving their goals. Coaching establishes a picture of what is here today, its aim is not to deal with the past but to craft the future. Coaching is not psychology, counselling nor is it mentoring. A coach does not give advice nor does he judges what the clients expresses or decides to act on.
